PREVENTION: Be extremely careful when using a fishing rod, especially a rod with a hook on it.

TREATMENT: If a fishhook hasn’t punctured the skin deep enough that the barb is still above skin level, simply pull the hook back out gently. However, if the barb on the hook has already punctured surface level (Figure 1), you must push the hook farther in (Figure 2), then snip the barb (Figure 3), and pull the hook back through its entrance (Figure 4). Wash thoroughly with soap and water and bandage wound.
